if you try to play the game and it work then you might have to change or get new thins for it. if it says "there is no direct 3-d device" it is because you need a better graphics card. if you dont here any sound it is most like becuase you need a better sound card but before you go out and get one you should see if your volume is muted or if the speakers are unpluged. if you computer crashes when you are playing it might be because you need more ram power and you can tell if you you here you cpu going. if you try to play online and it wants you to enter a number to get that number you need to look in your instruction book. to see what you need you should look below  at the system repuirements

if this did not help here are some qustions i get asked

1.01: How do I install Neverwinter Nights?

To install NEVERWINTER NIGHTS just insert the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS INSTALL DISK 1 into your CD-ROM drive and follow the on-screen prompts to install the game.

If the AutoPlay screen does not automatically appear after inserting the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS CD Install Disk 1 into your CD-ROM drive, follow these steps:

1. Close all running programs.
2. Ensure that the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS CD Install Disk 1 is in your CD-ROM drive.
3. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
4. Double-click the CD-ROM icon.
5. Double-click on the Setup.exe icon to launch the installer.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to launch the game.

Note: you do NOT need to install GameSpy Arcade to play Neverwinter Nights on the Internet.

After installing the game, you will be offered the choice to view the readme or play the game. The readme is a text file, which lists additions to the manual since printing.

1.02: How can I improve gameplay performance?

The installer automatically detects the type of system you have and configures your option settings for optimal gameplay when you first install. You can adjust the option settings later but if you turn up your options this may cause slowdowns in gameplay if you are running on less than a recommended system
Defragging your hard drive makes saving the game much faster - we recommend you defrag your hard drive prior to installing and occasionally between play sessions.

If you are experiencing slowdowns or poor performance, we recommend that you try turning down Options settings such as:

(Video Options) Graphics quality
(Video Options) Creature shadow detail
(Video Options) Enable environment shadows
(Video Advanced Options) Grass
(Video Advanced Options) Creature wind
(Video Advanced Options) Number of dynamic lights
(Video Advanced Options) Shadow casting lights
(Video Advanced Options) Anti aliasing
(Video Advanced Options) Texture animations
(Video Advanced Options) Environment mapping
(Video Advanced Options) Visual effects high

Certain options such as shiny water, dynamic lighting, and anti aliasing may only be available on the recommended video cards and higher.

A recommended system will be able to play the game with most of the advanced options turned on while a minimum spec system may require some of these options to be turned off.

1.03: How can I play through a Firewall?

If you are trying to play through a firewall of some sort, here is some information for you to help you get connected. Neverwinter Nights uses UDP, not TCP for its connections. If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that the following ports are open:

  • Ports 5120 through 5300
  • Port 6500
  • Port 6667
  • Port 27900
  • Port 28900

In addition to opening the ports listed above, you may need to allow incoming connections on the port you are running your server on (5121 by default) and forward those connections to the computer running the server.

Check out http://www.portforward.com for detailed configuration instructions for most common brands of router.
(note: not affiliated nor supported by BioWare Corp. or Atari)

If you have multiple computers behind a firewall and you want to play multiplayer with 2 or more of them at the same time, you must ensure the Client Port setting for each computer is set to a different value. You will find this entry in the file nwnplayer.ini Simply double click on it to open it, and look for the Client Port= line in the [Profile] section. Change this from the default value of 5120 on each machine. You have to stay in a certain range, so use numbers like 5121, 5122, 5123, etc.

If your server does not appear on the GameSpy game list:

  1. Verify that it is does not appear for other users. It may not be appearing for you because your game is published by your external IP address, this address may not be valid from inside your firewall.
  2. Verify that the server is accessible from the Internet, have a friend Direct Connect using your external IP address (ie not 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.*.*, these are local addresses).
  3. If you are starting your module from the command line of the Windows or Linux dedicated server, try starting it from within the application.
  4. If your module is very large or contains very large areas, try breaking it up into smaller pieces.

If you are wanting to make sure that your NAT is set up to allow the game to play here are some details.

Outgoing packets

  • Source port: 5120-5129
  • Destination port: 5121-5300

Incoming packets

  • Source port: 5121-5300
  • Destination port: 5120-5129

On the Game Client side, here are some changes to make things go better. Go to your nwnplayer.ini file in your Neverwinter Nights install directory, and find the following section:

[Profile]
Client Port=XXXX

Our suggestion is to change XXXX to 5120.

1.06: Can I import my character from the Baldur's Gate series?

Initially we had hoped to transfer Baldur's Gate characters over to the Neverwinter Nights game but after working with the completely different rules, engine, graphics and character attributes, we could not see any purpose to stripping an old character of all items (as Neverwinter Nights starts the player at first level), all experience, all additional level bonuses and leaving them with just their name. We decided against the ability to transfer characters.

1.07: How do I access the console if my keyboard does not have a ~ or ` key?

To access the console, you would press ~ or ` on your keyboard. It seems on some international keyboards, this does not work as intended. You can still send console commands to the game by using the chat line (where talk appears). To do this, simply preface the command with ##.

For example, to enter DebugMode you would type the following into the chat window:

##DebugMode 1

1.08: I have lost my CD Key. How do I get it back?

Depending on the version of Neverwinter Nights, the CD Key is usually printed in the manual, case, or on a sheet of paper provided in the retail box.

If you have lost your game manual but still have the game installed, you can find your CD Key in a file called "nwncdkey.ini" in the directory where you installed Neverwinter Nights (default location is C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN). "Key1" is for original Neverwinter Nights, "Key2" is for Shadows of Undrentide, and "Key3" is for Hordes of the Underdark.

If you entered your key to your BioWare Community account on this site (or another bioware.com site) to unlock game owner status you can find your Key on this page after you log in:

http://nwn.bioware.com/my_account/edit.html

From that page, click on the game you want your key for.

For replacement media requests (such as new manuals), you need to contact the publisher and follow their policies regarding replacement media:

1.10: I'm getting poor performance when playing Neverwinter Nights, what can I do to fix this?

Some possible fixes are:

Drivers - Download and install the latest drivers available for your video and sound card. Check out this FAQ entry for instructions detailing how this is done: "How do I properly download and install new video card drivers under Windows XP?"

Optimization instructions for ATI video card users

DirectX - Ensure you have the latest version of DirectX installed. Microsoft's DirectX site

Patch - Download the latest patch for Neverwinter Nights using either the in game "Update" function or by downloading the latest critical update for your install from here: http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch.html

Hard drive - Run scandisk and disk defragmenter, this will fix any errors on your hard drive and keep it running smoothly.

Virus Scan - Ensure your machine is virus free. Not only will this keep your machine running properly, many virus' have been known to harvest CD-Keys for popular games.

Spyware - Ensure your machine is spyware free, you can download a free trial of "Ad-Aware" a spyware/adware detection/removal for personal use: Lavasoft USA

Other - If you have other programs running in the background your machine may not have enough available system resources to deliver a satisfactory play experience. To free up additional resources shut down some of these other programs before you play the game.

Reinstall - If the above doesn't fix the issue, you may have to uninstall and reinstall the game. Make sure to Back up your "save" and "localvault" to a location outside of the NWN directory!

1.11: I have an ATI video card and even though my system meets the hardware requirements I still get poor performance.

This is a known driver issue with the Radeon video cards. Update your video card drivers to the latest Catalyst or Omega Drivers.

http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

Atari and BioWare take NO responsibility for the use of third party software, such as the Omega Drivers. However, if you are having issues with game performance in Neverwinter Nights they are worth trying. http://www.omegadrivers.net

One workaround is to go into the nwn.ini file and change Enablehardwaremouse=1 to Enablehardwaremouse=0.
The above option may not work on all systems but does on most.

Another option is to try turning off "AGP Fast Writes", "AGP Read" and "AGP Write" as this may have a positive impact on stability and performance in Neverwinter Nights.

If you notice the screen flickering and occasionally "blacking out", increase the refresh rate to 75Hz from the ATI Control Panel.

1.12: How do I obtain replacement media for the Neverwinter Nights series?

Replacement media requests are handled by the publisher of a given product, in this case Atari. In addition, there should be contact information for replacement media in your manual. Here is a link to the Atari support page: http://www.atarisupport.com

1.13: I purchased Neverwinter Nights: Deluxe Edition and I did not recieve a manual, can I get one?

The Neverwinter Nights: Deluxe Edition does not come with a physical manual. There is an Adobe Acrobat .pdf version on the Play disk.

1.14: Where can I find an official strategy guide for the Neverwinter Nights Series?

The Official Strategy guide for the Original NWN is "Neverwinter Nights: Official Adventure Guide" made by "Versus Books" http://www.versusbooks.com ISBN:1931886032 MSRP $19.99 USD

The "NWN:Shadows of Undrentide Official Strategy Guide" is made by BradyGames http://www.bradygames.com ISBN: 0744002680 MSRP $19.99 USD

The "NWN:Hordes of the Underdark Offical Strategy Guide" is made by BradyGames http://www.bradygames.com ISBN: 0744003415 MSRP $19.99 USD

1.15: When ever I try to log into a server to play Neverwinter Nights online, I receive an error message saying "cannot load module because the custom file 'cep.tlk' was missing."

The file in question is part of the Community Expansion Pack or CEP for short. It is a free distribution of community created game content for Neverwinter Nights.

Here is a link to the download site: http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/hakpacks/data/1098244451000.shtml

1.16: How do I properly download and install new video card drivers under Windows XP?

NOTE: BioWare accepts no responsibility for the use of these instructions. Official hardware support is available via your hardware vendor. Use at your own risk.

Click "Start"

Click "Control Panel"

Click "Add or Remove Programs"

Click on your current (old) video card drivers. If you have an GeForce series card your drivers will be listed as "NVIDIA Drivers" or "Nvidia Graphics Drivers". If you have a ATI Radeon Series card your drivers will be listed as "ATI Control Panel" or more likely "ATI - Software Uninstall Utility"

Click "Change/Remove"

A dialogue will appear asking you if you want to remove the drivers, click "Yes"

The drivers will now uninstall.

Do not restart your computer yet.

Now download the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacture's website.

If you have a Geforce Series card go to: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

If you have a Radeon Series card go to: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

Either save them to your desktop and then double click the install icon, or open them directly after downloading.

At this point you will need to follow the on screen instructions through the installation process. It is quite simple.

At the end of the process you will be asked to restart your computer. Do so, and when the computer reboots your new drivers will be fully installed.

After re-installing your video drivers you should also download and install the latest version of Microsoft DirectX: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

1.17: "Invalid character - Player Login refused"

Go into your Neverwinter Nights install directory, this is usually "C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN" and find a file called "nwnplayer.ini". Right click on this file and select "Open With..." and then choose "NotePad". The contents of the file will then be displayed in notepad. Look for "Single Player ItemLevelRestrictions" and "Single Player Enforce Legal Characters" under [Game Options]. Ensure that both of these are =0 and not =1. Save the file and then exit. You should now be able to continue your game.

1.18: I'm having problems connecting to Neverwinter Nights multiplayer after applying a patch?

After applying a patch to Neverwinter Nights please ensure that the game has permission to access the internet and also act as a server. If you are running personal firewall software and apply a new patch to Neverwinter Nights the personal firewall may prevent the game from accessing the internet as its executable has been altered by the application of the patch. This is a common defense employed by personal firewalls to combat Worm-type viruses and the personal firewall cannot differentiate between beneficial changes like a patch and malicious programming. Indicators of this issue may include Neverwinter Nights multiplayer not functioning properly or portions of its functionality not behaving as normal (i.e. Buddy List and Favorites).

1.19: How do I create a nwconfig hardware report for Neverwinter Nights?

Use the following steps to create the configuration report:

  1. When you launch NWN click the "Configure" button.
  2. If there is an "accept" or "Change" button click the "Change" button. (If there is no change/Accept button skip this step and go to the next one.)
  3. You will now be on the options screen, Click the "Scan" button.
  4. After the scan is complete, click the "Report" Button.
  5. The nwconfig.ini report will display. Click the "Save" button and save it to your desktop.
  6. You are now able to include the nwconfig report as an attachment in support correspondence.

1.20: How do I create a DirectX Diagnostic (DxDiag) report?

Use the following steps to create the configuration report:

  1. In Windows XP, click the "Start" button.
  2. Then click "Run..."
  3. Type "dxdiag" in the box provided and then click "Ok".
  4. The "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" window will open and a green progress bar will start to fill.
  5. Wait for the progress bar to fill completely and then click "Save All Information".
  6. In the "Save As" window, type an appropriate file name and choose where you would like to save the report. (The desktop is a good default.)
  7. After saving the report click the "Exit" button in the "DirectX Diagnostic Tool".
  8. You are now able to include your "DxDiag.txt" report as an attachment in support correspondence.

1.21: How do I take and submit a screenshot with my support request?

You can take and submit a screenshot by performing the following steps:

  1. Find the screen or error message you want to image capture.
  2. Press the "PrtScn/SysRq" key on your keyboard, which is often located near the "F12" and the "Scroll Lock" keys. You have now captured your screen to the Clipboard.
  3. Open MS Paint and paste the image using the "File" "Paste" commands. The screenshot should appear in the new MS Paint project.
  4. Next, click "File" "Save As..." and enter a filename that follows this convention: "BioWare Community Name 2 or 3 word image description" (i.e. "Jason Barlow - NWN Chapter2 Lockup").
  5. Click "Save" once you are satisfied with the filename you have chosen.
  6. Next, attach the image to your support correspondence as follows:
    • For MS Outlook users: click on the "Paper Clip" icon, browse to the location of the screenshot file you saved on your computer, and then click "Attach" when you have found the file you want.
    • (Alternatively, you can send an attachment in MS Outlook as follows: Click on "Insert" then "File", browse to the location of the screenshot on your computer, and then click "Attach" when you have found the file you want.)
    • For users of other e-mail services or software, look for the Attach File or Insert File command, browse to the location of the screenshot file you just saved on your computer, and then click "Attach" "Ok" or "Insert" when you have found the file you want.
    • The screenshot is now attached to your email message.
